Aquamarine can be easily confused with blue topaz thanks to a crystal structure, which is analogous to that of a diamond. But, between these two gemstones, aquamarine is much more scant and valuable. Also, aquamarine is closely related to emerald as both belong to the mineral beryl family. Emerald is more rare and valuable, but aquamarine is almost always free from inclusions.
According to traditional legends, aquamarine was found in a mermaid's treasure chest and was sanctified by the god of the sea with the power to keep sailors safe at sea. Sailors and travelers carried it for its supposed ability to ensure a protected passage and guarantee a safe return.
