How long does it usually take to design an engagement ring?
Recently my girlfriend and I have been talking about getting engaged and little does she know I'm planning to get her a ring this year. I was thinking of popping the question sometime in the summer July to August range as I'm still not sure when I want to propose. Once I find out what kind of style of ring she would like I was wondering when should I start looking and if I do go the route of designing a ring for her how long does it usually take a jeweler to get the ring ready? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Something I think a lot of women would appreciate is the ability to design or select the setting themselves, or do it together with you. Any reputable jeweler will allow you to purchase a solitaire type of ring in your price range, then exchange the stone into a setting of her choice. That way, you are comfortable with a cost you can afford, and she can have the setting she wants, but you still have a ring there for the big "popping the question moment." As far as timing, you should be able to have the ring within a couple of weeks at the most. My wedding ring was hand cast, but was still ready quite quickly. A premade setting would be even quicker. Black diamonds are kind of a paradox. They're real, but they don't do the thing that makes diamonds interesting. They don't sparkle, because they're black. They absorb light rather than refract it.

They are real diamonds, but they have a different crystalline structure. The regular crystal structure of the diamond is what causes the sparkle: light comes in, bounces around in a predictable way, and is bounced out. The cut of the diamond is designed to put "windows" precisely where the light will come out to best effect.

Black diamonds have a "polycrystalline" structure, which means it's kind of like many diamonds smashed together. Since they're all at different angles, and so you can't carve it to make sparkles. Instead, the light just gets absorbed, making it black.

It's still a pure carbon crystal, so they call it at "Carbonado", but it is technically a diamond. Just not a very attractive one. Diamond stores generally sell them at about the same price as white diamonds as exotic diamonds, but they don't sell nearly as well because they're not very pretty. They used to be cheaper than white diamonds, but a concerted marketing campaign has driven up the price.

Necklaces
Big and chunky beaded necklaces are still the focus of this summer. Two schools exist at the same time: organic earth tone beads and colorful and fun tone beads. Organic beads include bone and onyx necklaces. A more prevalent style is the eye-catching colored wood bead necklaces.

Rings
Parallel to the bulky necklaces, designers are fond of enormous finger rings with big faceted gemstones this summer. Colors
The main jewelry metal color for this year is gold color. Also, deep browns, khakis, bright reds, oranges, off-whites, and light beiges are the primary stone and leather colors used in all designer fashion jewelry by mid-summer.

Our response to color is actually much more complex than most people realize. It’s a mixture of instinct, cultural conditioning and the result of personal experiences and associations. We can see instinctive responses in nature, warning colors like red, orange and acid green are associated with being poisonous and animals have evolved to avoid those colors (as other animals have evolved to mimic those warning colors as self-protection. Associations of colors naturally come from our environment too, the blue of the sky, the gold of the sun, the green of grass, the red of blood and orange of fire, all produce memories and emotions. However, the memories and emotions about fire colors for example would be very different for someone who associates them with a log fire on an winter evening and someone who has had the misfortune to be caught in a house or car fire. Often negative memories mean a “gut response” to a color; the person might not even be aware on a conscious level why they just “don’t like” a color. These individual responses are one of the reasons why you should wear colors and jewelery that you are drawn to, rather than wearing things that you are “told” are right for you. You can’t feel confident and relaxed in clothes that you don’t feel comfortable in.

One of the biggest cultural differences in the symbolism of color is with black and white. In the West white is the color of purity, innocence and marriage, in the Eastern traditions white is the color of mourning and grief, while black is the color of funerals and death in the West.

The power of color to enhance or detract from our appearance is very marked, if you have ever experienced having a personal color analysis session you can’t have failed to be amazed how with some colors draped round your neck you look old, wan and even lopsided! Yet with others, you look younger, prettier and more vibrant. Basically, what color analysis does is to examine your natural skin tone and classify it as “cool” fair complexion with a cool bluey undertone or “warm” where your skin tones are peachy to golden yellow. This dual classification is then subdivided once more according to how intense your other coloring (eyes/hair) is. Of the two cool skin tones the darker coloring is termed “Winter”, she has dark, black or steel grey hair and looks best in clear, bright, true primary colors. The “Summer” person has ash blonde to mid brown hair, they look best in clear cool, subtle shades. The two warm skin tone classifications are “Spring” and Autumn”. Autumn people have dark brown hair with reddish lights, they look best in warm, earth like tones which work with the natural glow of the skin. Spring people have lighter hair, normally blonde or red and look best in the lighter, warm colors. Although this may seem a very prescriptive way to choose outfits it doesn’t in fact mean you can’t wear any colors, it’s just the shades you need to be careful of.

I’m going now to look at the colors of gemstones and detail some of the associations with stones of particular colors.

Blue Gemstones
Blue Agate, Lapis Lazuli, tanzanite, Sapphire, Topaz, Chalcedony, Iolite, Sodalite, Azurite, Blue Tourmaline, Spinel, Aquamarine, Blue Goldstone and blue moonstone are all blue stones.

Blue is said to induce calm, peace, creativity and serenity in the wearer. It is also linked to clarity of mental thought, inspiration and helps with meditation.

As with yellow stones, the flamboyance of orange draws attention to the wearer, it is linked with creativity, energy and sexual ttractiveness. It’s a “notice me”! “Pay attention” color to wear.

Red Gemstones
Garnet, ruby, Poppy Jasper, Sponge Coral, Sapphire, Red Jasper, Beryl, Tourmaline, Alexandrite and Spinel all have red forms.

Red is associated with excitement, energy and passion. It’s bold, fiery and linked with courage. A red gemstone is probably the most popular choice for jewelery because of it’s boldness and eye catching quality (red and orange are the colors that we see first at a distance).

Green Gemstones
Tsavorite Garnet, Opal, Sapphire, Malachite, Serpentine, Jade, Peridot, Gaspeite, Tourmaline, emerald, Jadeite, Jasper, Zircon, Beryl, Adventurine,Topaz and Alexandrite all have Green forms.

Green because of its vegetative associations is linked with fertility and wealth, it is also said to the be most relaxing color of all to look at and hence to be soothing and calming to wear.

Violet
Flourite, Amethyst, Charoite, Suglite, Jasper, Tanzanite, Garnet, Sapphire, Topaz, Agate, Chalcedony, Tourmaline and Spinel all have purple/violet forms.

Purple has been associated for centuries with royalty, power and wealth, more recently it has been liked with spirituality, creativity and insight.

Black
Onyx, Agate, Snowflake Obsidian, Jet, Black Spinel, Black Pearl, Haematite.

Black or the absence of color/light has many symbolisms, the color of mourning and grief, the color of high fashion and chic, sexy dressing. In jewelery, black stones are said to protect the emotions of the wearer from being displayed, allowing the wearer to remain mysterious.

Aqua/Turquoise Stones
Aquamarine, Topaz, Turquoise, Amazonite, Opal, Tourmaline, Apatite.

White and clear stones represent purity and truth and are often used as protective stones. Associated with the moon and femininity they are often given to celebrate loving landmarks in peoples lives such as engagements, weddings and anniversaries.

Brown Stones
Amber, Agate, Smoky Quartz, Topaz, Sapphire, Diamond, Tourmaline, Zircon

Brown is the color of the earth and the simple truths in life. Brown stones are said to promote wisdom, health, gravitas and stability in the wearer.

However, since only wealthy people can afford owning a different gemstone for each month, most people have adopted the practice of wearing just the gemstone that represents the month of their birth. Since then, these gemstones were referred to as birthstones.

The Meaning behind the Stones
Here are the different birthstones for each month of the Gregorian calendar and the meaning behind these stones.

1. January: The garnet is the birthstone for the month of January. The bright red color of the garnet is associated with blood and thus, was thought to bestow good health upon its wearer. 7. July: The sanguine ruby is the birthstone for July. Because of its blood-red color, the ruby is considered to be the gemstone for courage, strength and vitality. It is also said to nurture in its wearer integrity and contentment in his- or herself. The ruby is also said to inspire people to seek harmony with others.
8. August: People born in August have the peridot as their birthstone. The peridot is said to bestow a heightened sense of dignity upon its wearer, and to bring upon him or her good fortune. It is also believed to provide its wearer protection against evil intentions and against the terrors of the night.
9. September: Sapphire is the birthstone of September. It is a gemstone that is thought to build wisdom and clarity of thought in its wearer, as well as allow him or her the discernment to see truth no matter how deeply it is buried. The sapphire also inspires its wearer to develop serenity and tranquility in his or her soul.
10. October: The birthstone for October is the opal. The opal, with its varying colors, is associated with depth in emotions. A person who wears the opal is granted the ability to feel deeply for his or her fellow person, to look at life with hope and to burn subtly with an inner fire.
11. November: Topaz, the birthstone for the month of November, is a gemstone that represents health in body as well as health in mind. Wearing the topaz is said to hasten a person's ability to heal his or her own body in times of illness or injury. It is also thought to nurture practicality and creativity in its wearer.
12. December: Wearing the turquoise, the birthstone of December, is believed to bring luck and prosperity to its wearer in time for the coming New Year. The turquoise is also said to banish negative vibrations that can hinder the wearer's happiness and good fortune.
