The opal is a fascinating gemstone to look at. While other stones and diamonds are also interesting in an aesthetic sense, they don't match up. The stone's play of colors changes with the angle you look at it, making it a gem that you can look at for hours! These flashes of colors are called opalescence and may be numerous or few and differing in size and type. It is these colorings that determine how much an opal is worth.
The opal is a gem mainly found in Australia. Almost 95% of the stones on the market are mined there, though Mexico, Brazil and a few American states also export the colored gemstone. There have also been recent finding in the African nations of Ethiopia and Mali, but the opal is an Australian stone first and foremost.
Opals are classified into two major groups: precious opals and common opals. Those that display the characteristic play of color are known as precious opals, while those lacking this - single color specimens - are known as common opals. Gems used for jewelry can be cut from both the common and the precious. Both precious and common opals come in many different forms and varieties. The absolutely must cherished opal is the black precious opal; with a black, dark blue or dark green main background coloring, with a play of colors to match. The second most popular precious opal is the white, which is white, cream or yellow color and with a strong internal play of color. The most valued common opal is the so called mexican fire opal, which is a common almost translucent opal in orange red color.
Opals are used in jewelry and may be cut in thin slices that are put on a matrix material. Gems made this way are much cheaper than a solid precious opal and is a way to achieve the same display of color as a solid precious opal. The opal is a relatively soft stone, so a coating made of quartz is sometimes used in jewelry, to avoid scratches.
The stone in many different types of jewelry from necklaces, to pendants and earrings. There are stones and jewelry for all budgets.

Jewelry made with opals has become rather popular accessories. The availability of good quality stones, along with the mastery of skills needed to create splendid designs have made a beautiful opal inlay ring a much coveted commodity.
Now considered as an affordable luxury, opal jewelry offers no compromise on quality and creative workmanship. These are very exciting times for a consumer like me.
Opal is an eye-catching gemstone and I am especially fascinated that they can display the full color range of a rainbow. The uniqueness of its color play is just too good to ignore. It's not any more exclusive to people whose birthday is on the month of October. Opal has already caught a lot of people's fancy. And for some time now, it has become my favorite gem.
They make sensational jewelry, perfect if you want a fine-looking and unique piece for your collection. And if you're lucky, you could get them at an affordable price. The key is to know your opals and taking the extra effort to find the one.
An opal inlay ring is among the designs very fashionable these times. So if you plan to buy one, here are some things to consider:
- The ideal opal for inlaying is likely to be a fine quality crystal opal. An opal that is transparent so to see shimmers of color when you hold it against the light.
- If you have the right budget, you can opt for a black opal that is just divine for any kind of jewelry.
- Any metal setting will work for inlaid jewelry. Choose a setting thought that can provide stability, then beauty to your opal jewelry.
- If you opt to have accent stones, make sure they complement the opal. With opal as the center stone, it won't be a problem. Opal goes well with diamonds, rubies, and other precious stones.
- Consider the opal that you find most attractive and that fits your budget.
Browsing the web for opal jewelry, made me realize what I want for Christmas. I would definitely want to see a .96 carat black opal with diamond accents in 14k white gold setting around my right ring finger. Wearing rings around the index or pinky finger maybe vogue and meaningful but my ring finger would do fine. And yes, maybe a pair of matching opal earrings as well.

How much does it cost to replace a stone in a ring?
i have 3 rings that i need to replace the stone in. two of them are gold and have little circle opal stones in them. and another is a silver ring that has a tear drop shaped cherry amber stone. how much would it cost to get each of those replaced?
its the size of black pepper. you know the ones that are like little balls
Depends on the size and quality of each stone. You would be better off going to a local jeweler for an estimate.

Would you do this? It's been annoying me in the back of my mind for 2 years....?
If your wife died of cancer and had a lot of nice jewelry would you give it to your NEW wife after you moved away from your family jst to be with her or would you give her grandchildren the jewelery (kids were all male), especially the best piece of jewelry ( an opal ring) to your 1st grandchild..or to your NEW wife!?!!?!
Obviously to grandchildren but don't be surprised if he gives it to new wife. My dad's family won't talk anymore to one of my uncles for the same reason: my uncle has two sons from my aunt, but after my aunt died of cancer, he married another woman and gave her everything his wife had... my dad's family finds this extremely hurtful and insensitive, but this is just a guy with low social functioning who simply doesn't see anything wrong with it. So it happens a lot... sad but true

What is a good 5 year anniversary gift for my wife?
I've given a lot of jewelry in the past including diamond stud earrings, a bracelet, heart shaped diamond necklace, opal necklace, single diamond necklace, and a tanzanite ring. I'm okay with giving more jewelry, but the gift doesn't have to be jewelry. We're already planning a trip and we will go out to eat, so dinner can't be the gift either.
Ask her to marry you again. You don't have to actually do it....just asking her would be great. I just celebrated my 3 year anniversary with the love of my life, and if he asked me to marry him again it would tell me he is really glad he married me even though I already know.

A Timeless affair with Vintage rings and Jewels
Wedding is the most spectacular occasion in an individual's life. It is the beginning of a new life long journey of two people who have agreed to be there for each other at every step of life. To make this relation more strong there is nothing best than Vintage rings. This ring is exchanged between couples as an emblem of their love and affection for each other. Vintage ring is a timeless and classy piece used in this occasion for making that day magical.
Most common and precious form of such rings is silver vintage rings. Silver is greatly used for making such rings as it is non-allergic and affordable by all. Since it possess extreme lustrous and smooth surface, jewels created with it are dazzling and tantalizing. It is malleable, ductile and soft and amazing glittering pieces can be created with it. Apart from rings, wedding bands that can be worn by both bride and groom are also designed with this material to make perfect wedding elements. They are instilled with precious gem stones and semi precious stones to increase their beauty.
In addition to silver, other materials used for making vintage rings are white gold, gold, platinum and non allergic metal. Among them gold and white gold are commonly used due to extreme lavishness attached with them. They are used with stones to create immaculate pieces. Stones such as diamond, ruby, topaz, opal, amethyst and American diamond are used for preparing these pieces. Exquisite wedding band can be crafted with these stones to create simple ornaments for both men and women. Bride and groom can wear similar designs to make their love more strong.
The Gothic style for vintage rings is an ever demanding style. These days buyers have also inclined towards Retro and Modern styles to owe a combination of modernity with traditionalism. After this is Victorian, Roman and Georgian design which is in great demand. This is because such designs have perfect blend of style with class and are really voguish. Tremendously bejeweled rings can be created on demand that is themselves masterpiece. For this reason, individuals have become crazy for vintage rings as symbol of their love towards their life time partner.
Just like vintage ring for wedding, engagement ring has its own meaning and in-depth value attached with it. It is worn in the ring finger of left hand by girl and right hand by boy as this finger is considered as finger of love and soul. Nowadays, people have become very specific about these elements also and that is why it is important for bride and groom to wisely make a selection for their partners. They can easily do so by making a purchase through online outlets. Ample numbers of outlets sell these units that are obtainable at affordable prices. Such stores offer easy shipment services to their customers along with free gifts.

I have a ring and was hoping someone could help me?
It is a diamond and opal 14K yellow gold ring and has the following mark on the underside..."B F 14K". Does anyone know what the "B F" represents? I can't tell if there is a "&" or a dot in between the two letters. I was told it was 50-60 years old. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
The B F is probably a makers mark. The ring is foreign as it does not have a proper Hallmark and is stamped 14k. If it was British it would have been stamped 14ct. A British Hallmark consists of a date letter, the sponsors or makers mark, and a standard mark (in 14ct that would be 585), and the assay office mark (a lion for London, an anchor for Birmingham, a rose for Sheffield, a castle for Edinburgh). And then there are the assay offices that have been closed down like Chester and Newcastle etc. And then there is Dublin that was once part of the UK but not any more although it still has it's own assey office.
Check out the links below they will explain more
