The Significance of Color

Our response to color is actually much more complex than most people realize. It’s a mixture of instinct, cultural conditioning and the result of personal experiences and associations. We can see instinctive responses in nature, warning colors like red, orange and acid green are associated with being poisonous and animals have evolved to avoid those colors (as other animals have evolved to mimic those warning colors as self-protection. Associations of colors naturally come from our environment too, the blue of the sky, the gold of the sun, the green of grass, the red of blood and orange of fire, all produce memories and emotions. However, the memories and emotions about fire colors for example would be very different for someone who associates them with a log fire on an winter evening and someone who has had the misfortune to be caught in a house or car fire. Often negative memories mean a “gut response” to a color; the person might not even be aware on a conscious level why they just “don’t like” a color. These individual responses are one of the reasons why you should wear colors and jewelery that you are drawn to, rather than wearing things that you are “told” are right for you. You can’t feel confident and relaxed in clothes that you don’t feel comfortable in.

One of the biggest cultural differences in the symbolism of color is with black and white. In the West white is the color of purity, innocence and marriage, in the Eastern traditions white is the color of mourning and grief, while black is the color of funerals and death in the West.

The power of color to enhance or detract from our appearance is very marked, if you have ever experienced having a personal color analysis session you can’t have failed to be amazed how with some colors draped round your neck you look old, wan and even lopsided! Yet with others, you look younger, prettier and more vibrant. Basically, what color analysis does is to examine your natural skin tone and classify it as “cool” fair complexion with a cool bluey undertone or “warm” where your skin tones are peachy to golden yellow. This dual classification is then subdivided once more according to how intense your other coloring (eyes/hair) is. Of the two cool skin tones the darker coloring is termed “Winter”, she has dark, black or steel grey hair and looks best in clear, bright, true primary colors. The “Summer” person has ash blonde to mid brown hair, they look best in clear cool, subtle shades. The two warm skin tone classifications are “Spring” and Autumn”. Autumn people have dark brown hair with reddish lights, they look best in warm, earth like tones which work with the natural glow of the skin. Spring people have lighter hair, normally blonde or red and look best in the lighter, warm colors. Although this may seem a very prescriptive way to choose outfits it doesn’t in fact mean you can’t wear any colors, it’s just the shades you need to be careful of.

I’m going now to look at the colors of gemstones and detail some of the associations with stones of particular colors.

Blue Gemstones
Blue Agate, Lapis Lazuli, tanzanite, Sapphire, Topaz, Chalcedony, Iolite, Sodalite, Azurite, Blue Tourmaline, Spinel, Aquamarine, Blue Goldstone and blue moonstone are all blue stones.

Blue is said to induce calm, peace, creativity and serenity in the wearer. It is also linked to clarity of mental thought, inspiration and helps with meditation.

Yellow Gemstones
Amber, Citrine, Carnelian, Sapphire, Garnet, Tigers Eye, Topaz, Beryl, Jasper and Tourmaline all have yellow forms.

Yellow stones are said to draw attention to the wearer and build self esteem and confidence. Like the sun they illuminate, warm and cheer the wearer.

Orange Gemstones
Coral, Chalcedony, Zircon, Citrine, Sardonyx, Sapphire, Garnet, Fire Opal, Amber, Sunstone, Carnelian, Topaz, and Agate all have orange forms.

As with yellow stones, the flamboyance of orange draws attention to the wearer, it is linked with creativity, energy and sexual ttractiveness. It’s a “notice me”! “Pay attention” color to wear.

Red Gemstones
Garnet, ruby, Poppy Jasper, Sponge Coral, Sapphire, Red Jasper, Beryl, Tourmaline, Alexandrite and Spinel all have red forms.

Red is associated with excitement, energy and passion. It’s bold, fiery and linked with courage. A red gemstone is probably the most popular choice for jewelery because of it’s boldness and eye catching quality (red and orange are the colors that we see first at a distance).

Green Gemstones
Tsavorite Garnet, Opal, Sapphire, Malachite, Serpentine, Jade, Peridot, Gaspeite, Tourmaline, emerald, Jadeite, Jasper, Zircon, Beryl, Adventurine,Topaz and Alexandrite all have Green forms.

Green because of its vegetative associations is linked with fertility and wealth, it is also said to the be most relaxing color of all to look at and hence to be soothing and calming to wear.

Violet
Flourite, Amethyst, Charoite, Suglite, Jasper, Tanzanite, Garnet, Sapphire, Topaz, Agate, Chalcedony, Tourmaline and Spinel all have purple/violet forms.

Purple has been associated for centuries with royalty, power and wealth, more recently it has been liked with spirituality, creativity and insight.

Black
Onyx, Agate, Snowflake Obsidian, Jet, Black Spinel, Black Pearl, Haematite.

Black or the absence of color/light has many symbolisms, the color of mourning and grief, the color of high fashion and chic, sexy dressing. In jewelery, black stones are said to protect the emotions of the wearer from being displayed, allowing the wearer to remain mysterious.

Aqua/Turquoise Stones
Aquamarine, Topaz, Turquoise, Amazonite, Opal, Tourmaline, Apatite.

The color of water or of the sea these stones are loved for their associations with the coolness and cleanliness of pure water. Blue/green stones are said to promote feelings of tranquility and help with meditation as well as inspiring creativity in the wearer.

Pink
Beryl, Kunzite, Sapphire, Rubellite Garnet, Pink Jasper, Tourmaline, Rose Quartz, Topaz, Pink Pearls, Strawberry Quartz, Champagne Quartz.

Pink has many of the same qualities as red, only as you would expect, they are gentler and more muted. Said to help with feelings of anger and isolation. Pink represents friendship, love and trust.

White/Clear Stones
Diamond, Sapphire, Opal, Moonstone, Topaz, Pearls, Beryl, Zircon

White and clear stones represent purity and truth and are often used as protective stones. Associated with the moon and femininity they are often given to celebrate loving landmarks in peoples lives such as engagements, weddings and anniversaries.

Brown Stones
Amber, Agate, Smoky Quartz, Topaz, Sapphire, Diamond, Tourmaline, Zircon

Brown is the color of the earth and the simple truths in life. Brown stones are said to promote wisdom, health, gravitas and stability in the wearer.

To summarize then, color is a very powerful tool to use in projecting yourself to other people. It is also helpful in creating a desired mood or feeling through its personal associations. Use it with care!!

Opal Pendants

opal

If you're still young enough to remember your birthday, you probably also remember the special birthstone assigned to it. But at your age, we bet you don't really know the significance of your birthstone and what power the ancients felt would be bestowed about you by wearing it.

Opal is the birthstone for October and the gemstone given to commemorate a 14th wedding anniversary. The word "opal" for this dynamic gemstone was derived from the Greek word "opallus" which means to see a change in color…because it is, after all, opal's abilty to refract and reflect specific wavelengths of light that make it so special. In fact, there are more than a dozen varieties of fiery and iridescent opals.

Opal is a non-crystallized silica, a mineral found near the earth's surface in areas where ancient geothermal hot springs once existed. Romans called the magnificent gemstone "Cupid Paederos," meaning a child as beautiful as love. They believed that opals fell to earth from the heavens in a flash of lightening.

However they arrived in on Earth originally, today opals must be mined from deposits found primarily in Southern Australia, although other sources exist in Brazil, Mexico, Czechoslovakia, and Nevada.

Crown Jewels Opal has symbolized hope, innocence and purity through the ages. During the Middle Ages, fair-haired young women put sapphires in their tresses to protect the lovely blond color of their hair. Physicians ground opals into a powder that was ingested to ward off nightmares.

Since the 14th century, many cultures have considered this stone to be an Eye Stone, a stone that watches over royal families as well as a stone that strengthens the eyesight. They believed it to be the "king of gems" because an opal holds within its fire all the colors of the rainbow…and all other gems, as well. And like many birthstones, opals were treasured by ancient monarchs for their appearance AND their powers.

Opals were routinely set into the crowns and necklaces of rulers who believed the protective powers of the gemstones would ward off evil. Writers of the period believed the opal could render its wearer invisible when the need arose.

A gift of Opal is symbolic of faithfulness and confidence. And the wide range of choices in opal make them a perfect gift for anyone:

  • Black Opal - the stone has a dark body tone in comparison to a white opal.
  • White Opal - also known as 'milky opal', featuring light white body tones
  • Boulder Opal - very dark and beautiful in color
  • crystal opal - any opal with a transparent or semi-transparent body tone. Forms of crystal opal include black crystal and white crystal
  • Fire Opal - an American term meaning any opal that displays a significant amount of red coloring. mexican fire opal is a different kind of opal, which displays orange coloring)

Synthetic Opal

opal

Laboratory-created stones, or synthetic gemstones, as the name implies, are made in a laboratory. Synthetic gemstones do not have the rarity of naturally colored stones and they are less expensive than naturally mined stones. Because of the way they are made, synthetic gems may show subtle differences in shape and colour that help lo distinguish them from their natural counterparts. A synthetic gemstone is identical to a natural gemstone in almost every way. This includes the same basic crystal structure, refractive index, specific gravity, chemical composition, colors, and other characteristics. Since the same gemological tests are used for stone identification on both natural and synthetic gems, it is sometimes even possible for a gemologist to be puzzled as to whether or not a stone is natural or synthetic. Such stones can be made colourless, or, by the use of metallic oxides, in many colours, and thus can be made to resemble many natural stones, including the Amethyst, diamond, spinel, emerald, Opal and corundum (ruby and sapphire). Alexandrite.

Lapis lazuli, turquoise, and coral produced by the French manufacturer, Gilson, are similar to their natural counterparts, but are not true synthetics because their optical and physical properties differ from the natural gems. Gilson lapis lazuli, for example, is more porous and has a lower specific gravity.

Methods of making Synthetic gemstones

Growth from Melt:

* The Flame Fusion or Verneuil Process

Originally developed (1902) by a French chemist, Auguste Verneuil, the process produces a boule (a mass of alumina with the same physical and chemical characteristics as corundum) from finely ground alumina (Al2O3) by means of an inverted oxyhydrogen torch that opens into a ceramic muffle. With slight modifications, this method is used to produce spinel, rutile, and strontium titanate.

In Verneuil method for making rubies, a rod with a “seed crystal” is lowered into melted minerals and then brought back up. Repeating this process over and over grows a large crystal on the end of a rod from the melted minerals. The ruby can then be detached and cut and polished.

* Pulling or Czochralski's Technique
A method of growing synthetic crystal by high-melting point devised by Polish scientist Jan Czochralski, who discovered the method in 1916 while investigating the crystallization rates of metals. Czochralski and is named as Czochralski pulling technique. Where a seed crystal is gently lowered until it is in contrast with pure melt in the crucible and it is then pulled slowly upwards. The product shows rod-like single crystals. Used to make rare-earth garnets, lithium niobate, synthetic scheelite, and synthetic alexandrite.

* Brigman-Stockbarger Technique
The method involves heating polycrystalline material in a container above its melting point and slowly cooling it from one end where a seed crystal is located. Single crystal material is progressively formed along the length of the container. The process can be carried out in a horizontal or vertical geometry.

Growth from Solution:

* Hydrothermal Method
Aquamarine and Quartz crystals are grown in a solution in autoclaves, where temperature and pressure are controlled to create the feed material called lascas in the hotter portion. Seed crystals are in the cooler portion upon which the lascas redeposits, forming synthetic quartz. This process can take 30 to 60 days, and is also used to grow amethyst, citrine, or rock crystal.

* Flux Melt Method
Pioneered by the French chemist Edmond Fremy, the flux-melt technique is still used to make emeralds. The powdered ingredients are melted and fused in a solvent (flux) in a crucible. The material must be kept at a very high temperature for months, before being left to cool very slowly.

* High Temperature/Pressure Method:
One type of solution growth from water at high temperatures and pressure is known as the hydrothermal technique. Growth from solution is achieved by an increase in saturation. Like adding increasing amounts of sugar to water, the sugar will dissolve until the solution is saturated and can absorb no more and then it will begin to re-crystallize. With cooling, crystallization will increase and with heating it will decrease. A seed crystal is often employed to initiate the crystallization and to provide a point for the deposition to begin. Crystal growth rates are a function of time, temperature, and concentration. Hydrothermal techniques are used to make emeralds, quartz, rock crystal and amethyst.

* Skull Melting Process
This process was perfected in USSR specifically for crystallizing synthetic cubic zirconia, for uses in optical, electronic and laser equipment. Cubic zirconium oxide has a very high melting point and is a very reactive material. No container can hold this melt since cubic zirconia has a melting point of 2750°C, and hence a cold crucible or skull is used.

Imitation stones can be made up of any substance, like glass, paste or strass, faience, porcelain, acrylic, and plastics. Ceramics are the most common and least expensive simulants and they are used as substitutes for many kinds of popular gem materials like turquoise, coral, jade, pearls. Imitation stones are made to simulate a particular gemstone, but they do not have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties of the natural gemstone like the synthetic gemstone and hence can be easily distinguished from synthetic and natural gemstones. Volcanic glass, a man-made substance from obsidian and volcanic ash, is a possible candidate for imitation aquamarine and pale sapphire. Some examples of imitation stones are cubic zirconia, Synthetic Moissanite (Diamond) , and yttrium aluminum garnet which are diamond simulants. Since diamonds are so valuable and popular, the market for diamond impostors is huge, and many additional simulants like cubic zirconia, GGG, YAG, strontium titanate, synthetic rutile, and moissanite have been created over the last 50 years. Other imitation stones are Emerald Doublet, Foil Glass (Opal), Imitation Lapis Lazuli, Synthetic Forsterite (tanzanite), Synthetic Forsterite (Peridot).

Blue Opal

There are many other events or functions that require other types of jewelry. Wearing a diamond to a simple event such as a family gathering or a birthday party may be an overkill. For such functions, you may choose to wear other types of jewelry such as colored pearl strands or opal jewelry. In other words, dress appropriately whenever possible. Never attract unwanted attention if it's not necessary.

Unconventional jewelry types such as opal jewelry provides new and exciting options to the wearer. But like all other types of jewelry, choosing the right type of opal jewelry for the right occasion requires at least some basic knowledge.

Opal stones can be found in any kind of rock. It is a mineraloid gel that is formed at low temperature. What makes opal stones so attractive is that they can come in many different colors - white, red, gray, orange, blue, etc. That means there is always something available that will match your existing clothing in your wardrobe.

Another interesting characteristic of opal stone is its unique internal structure. At first glance, the stones seem to give out light from the inside. But in reality, this radiance is actually caused by light entering the stone, and refracted by the internal structure. This is a rare phenomenon that is not commonly seen. As a result, the more attractive the play of colors, the more valuable the opal stone. As this rare stones tend to attract attention easily (perhaps due to its natural radiance and interesting color plays), it is wise to wear them only for more formal occasions.

Other types of opal stones, which are more common, can be made into many different types of jewelry. Often, just by visiting an online jewelry store that specializes in opal jewelry, you will be able to find opal bracelets, opal necklaces, opal rings, opal pendants, opal earrings, loose opals, silver opal, and more. Even the most picky consumer will be spoilt for choice. With so many different options to choose from, perhaps the best thing to do is just remember one thing.

Remember that the most striking characteristic of opal jewelry is its natural colors and radiance. So when deciding on the best piece of opal jewelry to add to your current jewelry collection, think about the colors that will go with what you usually like to wear. It's all about matching colors, and creating the right mix of colors for your overall dressing. This will help make your decision easier, and you will be pleased that you added some opal jewelry to your current jewelry collection.
