Ruby Beads

ruby beads
When it comes to wearing beads around your neck, there are rules for color and type just like for any fashion accessory. Just like you simply can’t wear white after Labor Day, there are certain colors and types of jewelry to stay away from for the fall!

The brighter the color, the more spring and summer it is. So while you may want to wear something more flashy, like a quartz or many of the different faceted stone beads, you instead want to tone it down just a bit.

Amber is perhaps the most fall-like colored bead material there is for jewelry. Not only does its rich, warm orange perfectly match the fall foliage, but it gives off an air of sophistication and mystery. Being a completely natural occurring material you can be sure that there were very little environmental consequences to wearing amber beads.

Darker and deeper colors for stone beads is also a better idea for the fall. While bright and rich turquoise beads are great for spring and summer necklaces and bracelets, they generate images of the sunny Southwest and so are less fitting when the temperature gets frigid and chilly.

Instead of turquoise, go with the darker blue of lapis lazuli. Lapis is the color of the bluest ocean you’ve ever seen. A dark, mysterious blue that is more attuned to the darkened skies of a Northeast autumn. You can find lapis lazuli beads in just about any size or shape, from round to faceted.

Likewise, the rich green of malachite, with its alternating light and dark layers is well-suited for the shorter days marking the end of the year. You can however, find malachite beads in solidly lighter or darker greens. If you run across these go for the darker greens for fall and save the lighter green, and light green jade, for the long hot days of summer.

If you are looking at gemstone beads, you want to again go for the darker looks. Dark red ruby beads will cost more, as well a dark green emerald and dark blue sapphire, but their luster and depth will stun those around you at cocktail parties and autumn events.

If you choose to intermix gold or silver with any of the precious or semi-precious stone beads for your fall look, go for the darker, tarnished beads instead of the highly polished and bright beads. The shiny gold and silver will detract from the dark richness of the stone beads, which should be the focal point of your necklace, earrings or bracelet.

Beaded jewelry, from necklaces to bracelets, is an important accessory to complement any wardrobe. Whether you make them yourself or buy them off the shelf, it’s important to get the right look.

Ruby Crystal

July 28th, 2010 admin No comments

ruby crystal
Whichever way you cut it, ruby-red is the color of passion. (Hindus once valued the precious stone above all others, associating it with the idea of an eternal flame.) This tear-drop crystal ruby is set below a cluster of clear crystals and threaded on fine, gold-plated french rope. A breathtaking statement of love and affection.

Ruby is the most powerful of the red stones (which also include garnet, red jasper, and carnelian). The color red, though sometimes associated with the first chakra, is the natural partner of the second partner, which relates to sexuality, blood circulation, flow in general, and feeling.

This is definitely not a stone for anyone who tends to be fiery in nature. This can include the fire signs Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, or anyone who has a predominance of fire signs in their natal chart. It is probably also not for the quick-tempered, for people who are easily irritated or nervous.

Ruby can also awaken passion — not only sexual passion, but passion for living, for experiencing, for creating. It can stimulate motivating energy and the power of creative visualization. It also helps people to be realistic and honest about their goals and intentions.

Thus, if you are experiencing inertia, feel unimaginative, or feel that your imagination is creating dreams which are unrealizable, a ruby may help you to move forward in a positive way.

Large Ruby

large ruby

It is a known fact that many women love to wear jewelry that is studded with gemstones. These gemstones don’t have to be very large and they don’t have look expensive but they generally should be seen. One of the more favored gemstones that women love is that of the ruby. While wearing other types of jewelry with rubies is fine, the thought of wearing ruby necklaces is one that can make a woman very happy.

Admittedly some women will prefer that their ruby necklaces have other types of gemstones embedded along with the rubies. This look will not detract from the sheer elegance of the ruby necklaces. In fact having another type of gemstone perhaps in a smaller size can enhance the beauty and sheer luxury look of the ruby necklaces. As you look at these beautiful necklaces you will see many different designs.

In some of these designs the ruby will be the main gemstone only, however buying full ruby necklaces is somewhat difficult to accomplish unless you are looking for ruby necklaces that are said to have a therapeutic property. In this case you should look for jewelry stores or online jewelry stores that sell therapeutic gemstone jewelry. Other than these types of therapeutic jewelry you can find ruby necklaces that will give you lots pleasure.

These ruby necklaces will usually feature the ruby as a drop pendent style or you can find the ruby shaped as flowers, animals, stars and other shapes. In many of these ruby necklaces the ruby will be flanked by other gemstones. These types of ruby necklaces are very popular. This popularity can be most likely attributed to the low prices that these ruby necklaces can have.

The times that you will find inexpensive ruby necklaces will be when the ruby is of a small size or the ruby will not be of the highest quality. For the average person this ruby size will not be a big problem to worry about. There are some times when you will be able to find that people need ruby necklaces for reasons other than fashion jewelry. These occasions are ruby anniversaries and when people are looking for ruby necklaces as birthstone necklaces.

With so many great reasons to buy and wear ruby necklaces you are sure to find the necklace of your desire if you search long enough. You can buy a gorgeous ruby necklace that can be worn by itself, where the brilliant red fire of the rubies will prove to be magnificent around your throat.

Specialized Ruby

specialized ruby
Passion, heat and love. These words capture the essence of the ruby. This gemstone is one of the four classic precious gems – emerald, sapphire and diamond being the other three – and possibly the most coveted. Sure diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but put on a blood-red ruby tennis bracelet and you will sizzle.

For enthusiasts, any time is a good time to get one, but there is one other official day that calls for this luscious red stone. Just like months and birthdays, anniversaries also have gemstones attached to specific years. This gemstone gets an important one- the 40th anniversary. A couple that can make it to their 40th anniversary is durable, lasting and probably still sizzling. What better way to commemorate this than a dazzling ruby necklace or some ruby diamond earrings.

Black Ruby

May 4th, 2010 admin No comments

black ruby

Corundum is not always ruby, and other varieties of gem-quality corundum that are not red are known as sapphires. Pure corundum is colourless and it is the slight trace of elements such as chrome, iron, titanium and vanadium that creates the colour. The close relationship between rubies and sapphires has only been understood since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Before then it was believed that red garnets or spinels were also rubies. In fact the ‘Black Ruby’ and the ‘Timur Ruby’ in the British Crown Jewels are spinels rather than actual rubies. The balas ruby is a type of spinel; Bohemian rubies are derived from rose quartz and Siberian rubies are really pink or red tourmalines.

Ruby forms as crystal within metamorphic rock and they have been mined for more than 2000 years. The most prolific ruby mines are in Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, Sri Lanka and Africa and rubies are ranked as among the most valuable of the world’s gemstones. Although a lot of rubies are mined, high quality rubies are actually very rare. This scarcity of good rubies is due to chrome. The chrome is responsible for giving the ruby its gorgeous red colour, but when the ruby was being formed deep in the earth’s crust it was also the chrome that caused the huge amount of cracks and fissures within the crystal. Only a few rubies had the ideal conditions in which they could grow to a large size and stay in perfect condition, and this is why there are so few rubies of more than 3 carats in existence. One consequence of this rarity is that a ruby of large size with few inclusions can sometimes fetch more money at auction than a comparable diamond and the most expensive ruby ever sold at auction in 1988 was 15.97 carat gem that went for $3.63 million.

Real Ruby

April 14th, 2010 admin No comments

real ruby
The ruby is the oldest or first known of all precious stones, dating far back in the early history of Chaldea and Babylonia. The finest specimens, as well as the largest quantities, are found in Upper Burma, and at the present time over one-half of the world’s supply comes from this locality. The rubies found in Ceylon, Siam and Australia have not the deep rich color of the Burmese ruby which is a shade of red slightly inclined to the purple and is often called “Pigeon Blood Ruby.” The value of rubies depends upon their color and transparency.

The red sapphire or ruby is the most valuable of the corundum family, and when found of a good color, pure and brilliant, and in sizes of one carat and larger, it is much more valuable than a fine diamond of the same size.

Rubies and Sapphires are scientifically the same stone, differing only in color. Corundum, the predominating mineral of both, is composed of nearly pure alumina. The coloring substance, which differentiates rubies and sapphires, is believed to be chromium. In the scale of hardness the gem ranks as No. 9 and is thus the hardest of all substances excepting the diamond. Color is the most important factor in determining the value of the ruby. The gem is always more or less imperfect, but its freedom from bad imperfections is also important. Since fine rubies of all sizes are extremely rare, the price increases very rapidly with an increase in size, and a fine ruby of more than four carats commands an extraordinary price and can be said to be the most valuable of all gems, exceeding greatly a diamond of equal weight. The color of the ruby varies from the lightest rose tint to the deepest carmine, but the rarest and most valuable shade is known as Pigeon Blood. This is the color of arterial blood. The ruby has always been greatly admired, and many say that the ruby in the British Crown is the most beautiful gem they have ever seen.

The ruby is found in limestone deposits on side hills, but the largest quantity is found in alluvial deposits of gravel and clay in riverbeds. These deposits are about fifteen to twenty feet below the surface and from a few inches to five feet in thickness. This material called “byon” is mined or removed and put through a washing process by which the rubies are recovered.

The genuine ruby is gotten from the mineral known as corundum. Emery, so much used, is an impure form of corundum. The superbly blood-red color of the perfect ruby is produced by the very tiny portions of impurity in the substance after they have been crystallized by Nature’s wonderful processes. All genuine–that is natural stones, contain certain tiny flaws and blemishes and characteristic peculiarities. The fewer these flaws the rarer the gem. Imitation stones get their imperfections during manufacture, and as the chemists are more careful than Nature, these imperfections are less noticeable. By the following differences between the real and the artificial, you can test your ruby. A real ruby contains irregularly shaped bubbles; the imitation ruby contains bubbles that are perfectly round. Natural rubies all have a silky sheen, due to a number of tiny parallel lines going in three definite directions; imitation stones never have this characteristic.

While lab-created rubies and sapphires have a distinct use in jewelry, they can never affect the sale of the real gems any more than is the case with imitation pearls. Aside from the fact that the imitation can always be ultimately detected, the person desiring to purchase a ruby, as a ruby, and as a work of beauty and distinction wants a gem which he knows is one of nature’s rarities and is therefore possessed of intrinsically great value. A good illustration of this fundamental feeling is given by Mr. Zell a noted mineralogist, who says, “Many perfect copies of the Sistine Madonna have been made by good artists, the original is priceless, the copies at the most are worth a few hundred dollars, this is the relation of a gem made in nature’s laboratory to one produced by the chemist.”

Today, the ruby is still considered one of the most valuable and beautiful of the precious stones. Artisans of fine jewelry throughout the world continue to utilize this fine gem in their creations. Ruby is the birthstone for the month of July.

The Significance of Color

April 6th, 2010 admin No comments

Our response to color is actually much more complex than most people realize. It’s a mixture of instinct, cultural conditioning and the result of personal experiences and associations. We can see instinctive responses in nature, warning colors like red, orange and acid green are associated with being poisonous and animals have evolved to avoid those colors (as other animals have evolved to mimic those warning colors as self-protection. Associations of colors naturally come from our environment too, the blue of the sky, the gold of the sun, the green of grass, the red of blood and orange of fire, all produce memories and emotions. However, the memories and emotions about fire colors for example would be very different for someone who associates them with a log fire on an winter evening and someone who has had the misfortune to be caught in a house or car fire. Often negative memories mean a “gut response” to a color; the person might not even be aware on a conscious level why they just “don’t like” a color. These individual responses are one of the reasons why you should wear colors and jewelery that you are drawn to, rather than wearing things that you are “told” are right for you. You can’t feel confident and relaxed in clothes that you don’t feel comfortable in.

One of the biggest cultural differences in the symbolism of color is with black and white. In the West white is the color of purity, innocence and marriage, in the Eastern traditions white is the color of mourning and grief, while black is the color of funerals and death in the West.

The power of color to enhance or detract from our appearance is very marked, if you have ever experienced having a personal color analysis session you can’t have failed to be amazed how with some colors draped round your neck you look old, wan and even lopsided! Yet with others, you look younger, prettier and more vibrant. Basically, what color analysis does is to examine your natural skin tone and classify it as “cool” fair complexion with a cool bluey undertone or “warm” where your skin tones are peachy to golden yellow. This dual classification is then subdivided once more according to how intense your other coloring (eyes/hair) is. Of the two cool skin tones the darker coloring is termed “Winter”, she has dark, black or steel grey hair and looks best in clear, bright, true primary colors. The “Summer” person has ash blonde to mid brown hair, they look best in clear cool, subtle shades. The two warm skin tone classifications are “Spring” and Autumn”. Autumn people have dark brown hair with reddish lights, they look best in warm, earth like tones which work with the natural glow of the skin. Spring people have lighter hair, normally blonde or red and look best in the lighter, warm colors. Although this may seem a very prescriptive way to choose outfits it doesn’t in fact mean you can’t wear any colors, it’s just the shades you need to be careful of.

I’m going now to look at the colors of gemstones and detail some of the associations with stones of particular colors.

Blue Gemstones
Blue Agate, Lapis Lazuli, Tanzanite, Sapphire, Topaz, Chalcedony, Iolite, Sodalite, Azurite, Blue Tourmaline, Spinel, Aquamarine, Blue Goldstone and Blue Moonstone are all blue stones.

Blue is said to induce calm, peace, creativity and serenity in the wearer. It is also linked to clarity of mental thought, inspiration and helps with meditation.

Yellow Gemstones
Amber, Citrine, Carnelian, Sapphire, Garnet, Tigers Eye, Topaz, Beryl, Jasper and Tourmaline all have yellow forms.

Yellow stones are said to draw attention to the wearer and build self esteem and confidence. Like the sun they illuminate, warm and cheer the wearer.

Orange Gemstones
Coral, Chalcedony, Zircon, Citrine, Sardonyx, Sapphire, Garnet, Fire Opal, Amber, Sunstone, Carnelian, Topaz, and Agate all have orange forms.

As with yellow stones, the flamboyance of orange draws attention to the wearer, it is linked with creativity, energy and sexual ttractiveness. It’s a “notice me”! “Pay attention” color to wear.

Red Gemstones
Garnet, Ruby, Poppy Jasper, Sponge Coral, Sapphire, Red Jasper, Beryl, Tourmaline, Alexandrite and Spinel all have red forms.

Red is associated with excitement, energy and passion. It’s bold, fiery and linked with courage. A red gemstone is probably the most popular choice for jewelery because of it’s boldness and eye catching quality (red and orange are the colors that we see first at a distance).

Green Gemstones
Tsavorite Garnet, Opal, Sapphire, Malachite, Serpentine, Jade, Peridot, Gaspeite, Tourmaline, emerald, Jadeite, Jasper, Zircon, Beryl, Adventurine,Topaz and Alexandrite all have Green forms.

Green because of its vegetative associations is linked with fertility and wealth, it is also said to the be most relaxing color of all to look at and hence to be soothing and calming to wear.

Violet
Flourite, Amethyst, Charoite, Suglite, Jasper, Tanzanite, Garnet, Sapphire, Topaz, Agate, Chalcedony, Tourmaline and Spinel all have purple/violet forms.

Purple has been associated for centuries with royalty, power and wealth, more recently it has been liked with spirituality, creativity and insight.

Black
Onyx, Agate, Snowflake Obsidian, Jet, Black Spinel, Black Pearl, Haematite.

Black or the absence of color/light has many symbolisms, the color of mourning and grief, the color of high fashion and chic, sexy dressing. In jewelery, black stones are said to protect the emotions of the wearer from being displayed, allowing the wearer to remain mysterious.

Aqua/Turquoise Stones
Aquamarine, Topaz, Turquoise, Amazonite, Opal, Tourmaline, Apatite.

The color of water or of the sea these stones are loved for their associations with the coolness and cleanliness of pure water. Blue/green stones are said to promote feelings of tranquility and help with meditation as well as inspiring creativity in the wearer.

Pink
Beryl, Kunzite, Sapphire, Rubellite Garnet, Pink Jasper, Tourmaline, Rose Quartz, Topaz, Pink Pearls, Strawberry Quartz, Champagne Quartz.

Pink has many of the same qualities as red, only as you would expect, they are gentler and more muted. Said to help with feelings of anger and isolation. Pink represents friendship, love and trust.

White/Clear Stones
Diamond, Sapphire, Opal, Moonstone, Topaz, Pearls, Beryl, Zircon

White and clear stones represent purity and truth and are often used as protective stones. Associated with the moon and femininity they are often given to celebrate loving landmarks in peoples lives such as engagements, weddings and anniversaries.

Brown Stones
Amber, Agate, Smoky Quartz, Topaz, Sapphire, Diamond, Tourmaline, Zircon

Brown is the color of the earth and the simple truths in life. Brown stones are said to promote wisdom, health, gravitas and stability in the wearer.

To summarize then, color is a very powerful tool to use in projecting yourself to other people. It is also helpful in creating a desired mood or feeling through its personal associations. Use it with care!!

Trip over love, you can get up. Fall in love and you fall forever. ~Author Unknown

As a chubby toddler, with wings, holding a weapon approaches towards so-called singles, everybody seems infected with the mush in the air.

Yesterday, Loveland Chamber of Commerce unveiled the official 2010 Loveland Valentine Card in US. Loveland resident named Tracie Jenkins designed the winning card.

The card is a classic black and white picture shot in the 1940s. It shows a brother and sister as toddlers, sitting on the ledge of Loveland’s Feed & Grain building. It also features a big red heart in the backdrop and writing, along with old postcards on it.

An Overview of Birthstones

Although a connection between gemstones and the months of the year has been traced back as far as the first century, evolving interpretations have prompted the association of multiple birthstones with each month of the year. Jewelry incorporating a person’s birthstone is a highly personalized and cherished gift. Here we examine the birthstone associated with each month of the year based on commonly accepted modern birthstone interpretations:

January: Best recognized for their rich reddish brown color, Garnets actually span a range of colors including orange, violet, green and yellow. It is perhaps due to the deep red color common to this coveted gem that it was long associated with healing powers for blood related ailments.

February: February’s birthstone, Amethyst, gets its name from the Greek term “amethystos,” which means not drunk. Historically associated with sobriety, the amethyst is a type of quartz occurring naturally in rocks and appearing in various shades of purple.

March: March’s birthstone, the Aquamarine, has been associated with courage and happiness. With hues ranging from pastel blue to teal to deep blue, it is apparent why the Aquamarine’s name is derived from the Latin terms meaning “sea” and “water.” The bloodstone is another commonly accepted birthstone for March.

April: April boasts possibly the most desirable birthstone, the diamond. Highly regarded worldwide for its unmatched beauty, strength and historical significance, April’s birthstone is also given as a symbol of love and impending marriage today.

May: Vibrant green characterizes May’s birthstone, the emerald. Emeralds comprise the green variety of the mineral beryl, while March’s birthstone Aquamarine is beryl’s blue variety. Emeralds have historically been associated with good luck and long life and have been thought to aid in eye health.

June: The modern June birthstone is the pearl. Pearls are the only birthstones that are created by a living organism, the oyster. An oyster will secrete nacre, an iridescent, lustrous substance, onto a foreign object as a natural defense mechanism, a process that can eventually form a pearl. Today, most pearls are cultured pearls, or pearls that are created after humans introduce irritants to prompt oysters to secrete nacre in a controlled environment.

July: Though July’s birthstone, the Ruby, is associated with a deep red, the natural Ruby can range from pink to brown. The Ruby was in ancient times considered to possess magical powers and was believed to change colors to warn its owner of danger. Ruby’s vibrant color, hardness second only to diamonds and rarity make it one of the most valuable gemstones.

August: Peridot, the modern August birthstone, ranges in color from light yellow-green to bright green to olive green, depending on its iron content. The Peridot is an extremely old gem, though it has seen fluctuations in popularity over time. A mid 90s discovery of a massive Peridot deposit prompted a modern day surge in Peridot availability and popularity.

September: September’s birthstone, the sapphire, can span many colors but is most well-known for its rich blue variety.

October: The birthstone of October is the Opal, a highly regarded stone emitting a rainbow of colors. The Opal is admired for its iridescence and, unlike other gemstones, is not characterized by a crystalline structure.

November: The modern birthstone of November is Topaz. Topaz, occurring in a variety of colors but most commonly yellow, has been incorporated into striking jewelry for hundreds of years. Derived from a Sanskrit term meaning “fire,” the term Topaz was at one time used to describe any yellow gem.

December: Turquoise may be the most commonly accepted birthstone for December today, though blue topaz and tanzanite are also associated with the month of December. Like many stones, turquoise has historically been linked to desirable virtues. This non-transparent stone has been said to promote mental clarity as well as trust and kindness.
