A process has been discovered whereby the color of white or clear topaz can be changed by coating the reverse side of the gem with an extremely thin film of titanium oxide and then placed in a vacuum. This process creates topaz in a wide variety of iridescent, rainbow colors. When the light falls upon the gem the coating interferes with the way the light is deflected. Topaz is a very hard gemstone, however because of the way the crystals are structured it is prone to splitting in two.
