where can I find high quality beaded gemstone necklaces?

I love natural gemstones like moonstones, topaz, citrine, peridot, garnets, especially with contemporary gemstone pendants. I see lots of pretty things on QVC and HSN, but the pieces are mass produced using designer's names and I see tons of complaints on the quality, I also see a lot of low quality beaded gemstones on the market and would like to know where I can find the highest quality that is not mass produced. Got any suggestions?

Finding good stores that sell beautiful natural gemstones for reasonable prices is not easy. Here in LA there are lots of stores that sell moonstones and topaz and quartz but they are priced crazy. On my last vacation I found a few shops in Asheville North Carolina that had amazing gemstones and even black and brown diamonds, which I love but they too are way out of my budget. The emerald is probably the most rare of all precious stones and is considered by some to be even more valuable than the diamond. Compared with other precious stones the emerald in its occurrence in nature is unique, for it is found in the rock in which it was formed. Unlike diamonds, sapphires and rubies, it never occurs in gem gravels. The earliest known locality where emeralds were found was in Upper Egypt near the coast of the Red Sea. The best stones, however, are found in Columbia, South America. Fine specimens have also been found in the United States in North Carolina.

While the usual shade of color seen in emeralds is alluded to as emerald green, there are other shades, such as grass green, sea green and green slightly tinged with yellow. The shades most highly valued are those of an intense fresh green sometimes compared with that seen in a meadow in spring.

Beryl is a mineral known to gem lovers under several different names, the most valued of which is the Emerald. The mineral beryl composing the various gems is practically the same in composition, hardness, and other properties, and the gems may be differentiated only by their color. In composition beryl is a silicate of aluminum and glucinum. On the scale of hardness beryl is graded 7 ½ to 8, and is thus much softer than the diamond, ruby, or sapphire. It is owing to this fact that the emerald scratches easily and that care must be taken that when worn it is not subject to chafing by diamonds or other harder gems.

Beryl in this common form occurs in many localities, but the mineral in its rarer form of emerald is comparatively of very rare occurrence. The emerald or green beryl, as it should be scientifically known, has long been the most highly prized of the green gems. In brilliancy it exceeds all other green gems excepting only the very rare green sapphire. The most valuable specimens exhibit a vivid grass-green shade, and it is to this color that they owe their great value. Other considerations, such as freedom from imperfections, are quite secondary in determining the value of the stone. In fact a perfect emerald is almost never found, and this circumstance has passed into an Eastern simile which runs, “As scarce as a perfect emerald,” this being a symbol for the acme of rarity. The emerald is light in weight and an emerald of a given size will be about a third larger than a diamond and forty-five per cent larger than a sapphire of equal weight. The distinctive color of the emerald is probably due to a trace of chromium in its composition.

Does created alexandrite do the same thing as genuine alexandrite?

I'm thinking about buying a ring with a created alexandrite in it since alexandrite is my birthstone, but I want to know if it changes color under different lights like a genuine alexandrite does.
Haha, so I just add that I do have a real alexandrite, so I know that its natural color is purple and that it turns blue or gray under certain lights. I just wanna know if created ones do the same.

The change of color is based on the "cut" and light reflection and refraction principles and the actual individual stone itself.

Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl which changes color in different lights due to its unusual absorption. Green in daylight and wine-red in most artificial lights, but the color changes will vary in different stones.

There is definitely a difference of course, as it is not easy to duplicate the light changes of the natural stone.

Also a real alexandrite is quite rare and expensive.

When it comes to wearing beads around your neck, there are rules for color and type just like for any fashion accessory. Just like you simply can't wear white after Labor Day, there are certain colors and types of jewelry to stay away from for the fall!

The brighter the color, the more spring and summer it is. So while you may want to wear something more flashy, like a quartz or many of the different faceted stone beads, you instead want to tone it down just a bit.

Amber is perhaps the most fall-like colored bead material there is for jewelry. Not only does its rich, warm orange perfectly match the fall foliage, but it gives off an air of sophistication and mystery. Being a completely natural occurring material you can be sure that there were very little environmental consequences to wearing amber beads.

Darker and deeper colors for stone beads is also a better idea for the fall. While bright and rich turquoise beads are great for spring and summer necklaces and bracelets, they generate images of the sunny Southwest and so are less fitting when the temperature gets frigid and chilly.

Instead of turquoise, go with the darker blue of lapis lazuli. Lapis is the color of the bluest ocean you've ever seen. A dark, mysterious blue that is more attuned to the darkened skies of a Northeast autumn. You can find lapis lazuli beads in just about any size or shape, from round to faceted.

Likewise, the rich green of malachite, with its alternating light and dark layers is well-suited for the shorter days marking the end of the year. You can however, find malachite beads in solidly lighter or darker greens. If you run across these go for the darker greens for fall and save the lighter green, and light green jade, for the long hot days of summer.

If you are looking at gemstone beads, you want to again go for the darker looks. Dark red ruby beads will cost more, as well a dark green emerald and dark blue sapphire, but their luster and depth will stun those around you at cocktail parties and autumn events.

If you choose to intermix gold or silver with any of the precious or semi-precious stone beads for your fall look, go for the darker, tarnished beads instead of the highly polished and bright beads. The shiny gold and silver will detract from the dark richness of the stone beads, which should be the focal point of your necklace, earrings or bracelet.
