Alexandrite Gemstone

alexandrite gemstone
The debate continues as to which origin produces the finest, most eye-pleasing natural alexandrite mined stones. Even though buyers are extremely interested in learning of the country of origin of their alexandrite, most gemological labs do not have a test to verify the origin of an alexandrite! Therefore, it may come as a surprise that when asked, those of us with experience must often make an educated guess based on certain characteristics sometimes seen in stones from specific regions.

Alexandrites were once mined only in Russia, and while Russia has long been thought of as "the place" for alexandrites, we know from experience that the quality of the individual specimen is what matters, not the origin.

For decades the word was that any material that wasn't Russian mined was considered inferior, and even today some people prefer only stones that are of alleged Russian origin. However, in the 1980's a Brazilian find shook the gem world with its high quality and brilliant color change from a striking bluish green to magenta!

A find of good quality material followed in India years later. The Brazilian and Indian material is generally of better color change quality than the later discovered Tanzanian material, although any location where gems are mined will produce some material of better quality, some of lesser quality. That is why a specific country of origin does not necessarily determine an alexandrite's value.

Although the optimal color change in an alexandrite would be from a brilliant emerald-like green to a ruby-like blood red, gemological experts agree that contrary to what many people believe, there are very few alexandrites which change color to a true ruby red under everyday household lighting! There is a wide range of lovely colors to be seen in these amazing stones and the few that do change from deep green to burgundy are often dark in tone, opaque or highly included, so that many consider them unattractive.

It is important to note that the old saying "emerald by day, ruby by night" was coined in the days when the light from a candle or fire were the only sources of nightime lighting available. By the light of a candle or flame most alexandrites will exhibit considerable reddish tones, but not under today's bright or "soft white" household bulbs! It is only by candlelight or firelight that the most dramatic color change from green to reddish purple will be seen.

What you should look for in a quality natural mined alexandrite is a shade of teal, emerald or forest green under natural daylight or fluorescent lighting, ideally changing to a soft amethyst purple under regular incandescent bulbs, but more often a slightly grayish, bluish violet is seen, again more closely resembling a tanzanite or a purple sapphire than a ruby. The color will usually deepen to plum by very low incandescent light. Dim the lights altogether and pink, red or lovely magenta highlights will be evident by the light of a candle or flashlight, which is the true test of color change and a gemologist grading an alexandrite will not be able to see the full and complete color change unless they take the time to do this.

Of one thing you can be sure - every alexandrite is an individual and it is rare to find two that display exactly the same colors under a variety of lighting conditions. This characteristic of individualism is due to a combination of factors, including variances in clarity and color, as well as the shape and cutting of the stone, and makes alexandrite all the more valuable and endearing to collectors.

Green Aquamarine

green aquamarine
aquamarine gemstones are a member of the beryl group of minerals, the most famous of which is emerald. Aquamarine is the blue/green variety of beryl and is from the Latin word meaning "sea water". Aquamarine gemstones are mainly light blue in color and are very pleasing to the eye. Aquamarine is the birthstone for March and is a very popular gemstone, especially with high end jewelry designers It is a relatively hard and durable gemstone, rated 8 on the Mohs scale, and possesses moderate to good brilliance. Aquamarine can occur in very large clean hexagonal or irregular crystals, and is even found as bi-color with other beryl minerals such as morganite. The coloring element to produce the beautiful blue, blue-green or green color is iron, which is substituted for aluminum in the crystal structure. Aquamarine can occur in a blue/green color and even a pure green color, which is than heat-treated to a temperature of 600 -1200 degrees Fahrenheit to produce a pure blue color. This treatment is permanent and accepted in the gemstone trade as standard.

Yellow Alexandrite

yellow alexandrite
Cats eyes and stars appearing in gemstones are still considered inclusions but of a unique type. While the presence of inclusions is often detrimental to the value and looks of gemstones, cats eyes and stars have the opposite effect. These may occur naturally or man-made but ultimately, they enhance the beauty of gemstones. Use the following tips when shopping for gemstones with stars and cats eyes.

Chrysoberyl gemstone is arguably the most popular gemstone for its cats eye inclusions. Chrysoberyl is often mistakenly believed to be under the beryl group of stones. In truth, chrysoberyl is not part of the beryl group, but aquamarines and emeralds are. Chrysoberyl are mostly found in East Africa, Sri Lanka, and Brazil.

This gemstone registers the third highest rating in the Mohs Scale for naturally occurring stones. There are three types of chrysoberyl: alexandrite, the more common yellow chrysoberyl, and lastly cymophane or cats eye.

Common chrysoberyl is yellowish-green. It may be translucent or transparent. If it turns yellow and see-through, that's the time it can be used as a gemstone. Alexandrite, on the other hand, has colors varying from orange-yellow to red to emerald-green. It can display even other colors if seen under artificial lighting.

Lastly, there is cymophane or the chrysoberyl cats eye. Its name was derived from its similarities with a cats eye, showing a silk-like spread of light stretching from a light-green source.

Moonstone Gems

moonstone gems

Gems are often valued for their appearance or monetary value. As this introduction to moonstone gems details, certain gems carry a more spiritual value than monetary.

Moonstone is one of the most mythical of all gemstones. With its exotic, lunar name and its milky unique rainbow sheen, moonstone is highly prized by many practitioners of crystal and stone healing, as well as some mystic religions. Moonstone is a sacred stone to the people of India, and was named by the Romans for its ability to reflect moon light, making it a sacred stone to this culture as well. Today, the many aspects of moonstone gems continue to make them a sought after stone.

Moonstone is one of the birthstones that are used for the month of June (along with pearl) and it is also used to represent the 13th wedding anniversary. Gifts of jewelry made with this stone are commonly given for this anniversary. Moonstone comes from the mineral family of feldspar, and it is the most valuable of all stones in the feldspar family. It is composed of the mineral albite (which helps to give the stone its blue sheen) and orthoclase feldspar. Moonstone can come in many different colors, ranging from the typical milky white or gray to blue, peach, pink, yellow, brown and transparent.

The most beautiful type of moonstone is rainbow moonstone, which is a milky white to gray color with a blue and rainbow sheen that catches the light. The moonstone gem is found in several different areas of the world, such as Brazil, India, Germany, Madagascar, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Tanzania and the US. It is prized in many cultures and used in Zodiac, traditional crystal medicine, Ayurvedic medicine and many other areas.

Moonstone gems many mystical properties offer the wearer or the possessor protection and healing in different ways. It is believed that moonstone brings good fortune, protects women and children (who are generally under the protection of the moon), enhances passion and balances yin and yang. In ancient times, one belief stated that if a person held a moonstone in their mouth during the full moon, they could tell the future. Moonstones were also used to assure good crops.

Moonstone gems have also been attributed to have healing qualities, a notion generally believed in some cultures who value stones for spiritual healing. These properties are said to promote digestion, stop nosebleeds, and protect against epilepsy and sun stroke. Whatever the reason you choose, owning a moonstone is a good idea, even if it's just because of its beauty.

Genuine Natural Alexandrite

natural alexandrite
If you are a person with taste and you want to purchase a piece of jewelry for your loved one, then you would not want to settle for cheap copies or fakes. While the most common idea of a perfect gemstone is a diamond, there are some other options you can go with.

Have you ever heard of chrysoberyl? This is a gemstone that occupies the third spot in the hardness top of naturally occurring gemstones. Chrysoberyl has three varieties with different characteristics: ordinary chrysoberyl, which is yellowish-green, alexandrite, a gem that changes color in different lightings, and cymophane, also known as cat’s eye.

The cat’s eye gem presents an optical reflectance effect which reminds of the eye of a cat. The best cat’s eye is believed to have the colors of milk and honey, because a sharp and milky ray crosses the honey colored gem right down the middle.

Cat’s eye is not the only gemstone which creates an effect like this. Among others, corundum, quartz, tourmaline and more can create a similar effect, but not as intense. Because of this, they are called quartz or ruby cat’s eye, and the only cat’s eye that needs no other tag is cymophane.

A cat’s eye ring can be a suitable accessory for both men and women. This is due to the fact that the stone is durable, having a 8.5 hardness on the Mohs scale, and therefore it can stand abuse. Because it is rare, the price tag on such a gem can be quite high. In compensation, the fact that is little known and is rarely asked for in stores, the demand for the stone lowers the price.

The popularity and value of this gemstone increased greatly in the 19th century, when the Duke of Connaught gave a cat’s eye ring as a token of engagement. Up to that point, the gemstone could only be found as part of the collection hobbies of various people.

Handmade jewelry has been around for ages. Around two hundred years ago, British royalty purchased an exquisite 105 carats cat’s eye ring, which has been passed on to four monarchs. The record for this gemstone is the 500 carats cat’s eye previously owned by the wealthy British banker and gemstone enthusiast Thomas P. Hope. There was no other cat’s eye that neared that value.

A cat’s eye ring can be offered as a gift on various occasions. It symbolizes wealth and abundance, and it targets the wearer’s state of mind, altering it in order to embrace all that surrounds us. In order to have that effect, the gemstone must be genuine.

David Weitzman is a cosmic jewelry designer that handcrafts jewelry since 1998. All the pieces he manufactures are subdued to a special energizing process that consists of meditation, creating jewelry that can help people change the course of their lives.

The cat’s eye ring is merely one of the hundreds of designs created by David. Only the finest quality materials are used so when you purchase jewelry from him, you know it is the best. If you want to have a peek at David creations, all you need to do is visit ka-gold-jewelry.com.

Lab Created Alexandrite Rings

lab created alexandrite rings

Are you planning to design your own ring with Alexandrite? Or, perhaps you're considering creating a gold and alexandrite necklace. If this is the case, then it's going to be important that you understand the different types of stones and what sets them apart from one another.

natural alexandrite is in the chrysoberyl family of gemstones. Like other types of chrysoberyls, it contains iron and titanium. But, what differentiates it from other types of chrysoberyl is that it also contains chromium as a major impurity. The chromium is what causes those wonderful color-changing qualities. This is so important to the stone because only chrysoberyls displaying a distinct change of color can be considered true Alexandrite.

The best quality of lab-created Alexandrite is made by Czochralski pulling - which tends to be an expensive method used to create this stone. This method was devised to grow high quality crystals for the computer industry. It was quickly discovered that the crystal quality from this method was very desirable for creating gem-quality gemstones for jewelry. Lab-created stones are often referred to as "Lab Alex" and have a similar chemical composition and the same physical properties as the genuine thing.

Lab-created gems are some of the finest stones you can buy for the money. In most cases, the clarity in lab-created stones is far superior to natural stones. You can have a stone with all the properties of the natural stone - without the inclusions. Also, the cost of natural Alexandrite is cost-prohibitive for the average person.

These lab-created stones are considered fine gem quality . The Czochralski is the best lab-created Alexandrite technique available. However, beware of sellers who try to pass off stones created from Corundum as Czochralski stones. They will not have the same quality.

Simulated Alexandrites are also created in the lab; however, they don't necessarily have the same physical properties or chemical composition as natural stones. The only similarities they share with genuine and natural stone is their color and appearance. Most simulated stones are made of "lab corundum," "lab cubic zirconia," or glass.

Beware of sellers who call their simulated stones "lab created." It would be more acceptable for them to refer to it as CZ, glass, simulated stones, or imitation stones. Beware of imitation Alexandrite created from glass. They are not durable, do not have the same appearance and quality as the natural ones, and should be avoided.

While we would all love to own a two carat genuine and natural alexandrite gemstone ring, the reality is that most of us can't shell out that kind of money. So, the next best thing is a lab-created gemstone created using the Czochralski method. You can purchase a large, eye-catching stone for the price of a typical amethyst or peridot. These gorgeous stones are priced so that everyone - no matter what their budget - can enjoy the beauty of owning an Alexandrite.

Aquamarine Rough

aquamarine rough

Rapturous, paradisiacal, divine, angelic, sublime, could be some of the synonyms for tanzanite, when first found in the year 1950. Tiffany publicized tanzanite on a large scale.

Tanzanite is actually a delightful, intense blue to deep-blue gemstone which is very rare. Rare, due to its only source i.e. Tanzania, as suggested by its name. This is a much young and refreshing gemstone which turns its color to a flashing deep blue as it gets heated at a high temperature. Naturally found roughs, are actually treated as lightening strikes crystals lay loose on ground. Mineral crystals are originally brown to tawny colored.

Elaborating on this multifarious precious gemstone, there is not much folklore or history about it. However, since its discovery in the mid 21st century till now, it has managed to gain an overwhelming reputation of itself.

Making a special place in hearts’ of men and women, tanzanite today has a suave and celestial choice for contemporary jewelry. Contemporary jewelry includes rings, earrings and pendants, along with bangles, bracelets etc.

Today, there are many resembling gemstones of tanzanite, as options to suit your pocket and choice. Moreover, choice could be influenced with factors like hardness, durability etc.

Aquamarine, a birthstone for March, is a member of mineral beryl. This mesmerizing stone varies in color from an almost colorless dull blue to an intense blue-green or teal. Dull or paler stones are usually heat treated to achieve that much coveted intense blue like tanzanite. It possesses a hardness of 7.5 to 8 Mohs’ on scale. A rock with vitreous luster gem, aquamarine is an amazingly transparent and ‘eye clean’ gem with almost no inclusions or flaws.

Zircon, belonging to mineral family of nesosilicates is usually found in shades like red, pink, brown, yellow, hazel, black, or colorless. Almost any color in rainbow is able to be created by heating colorless zircon.

Zircon possesses hardness of 7.5 Mohs’ on scale, unlike diamond. However, it acts as a popular substitute of diamond. A traditional gemstone for December born, zircon comes to be transparent, translucent to opaque.

Sapphire or blue sapphire also acts wonderfully as a striking resemblance of tanzanite. Blue sapphire, with a sort of flickering archangelic blue hue, reflected through its facets, appeal a lot.

Similarly, there are gemstones in ethereal blue like blue topaz, iolite, and indicolite tourmaline which greatly reflect the grandiose like tanzanite.

Exclusive showcase of tanzanite earrings exude intrigue, through various artful conceptions in the collection. Possess or gift your loved ones with some versatile darlings like these to accentuate your wardrobe.

Aquamarine Stones

gemstone engagement rings have been growing in popularity for past many years and have gradually replaced diamonds to larger extent. Diamonds are valued because they are rare but certain gemstones are even rarer. Varieties of colors, shape and sizes are available to the couples when they opt for gemstones to enhance the look of the ring. But the couples should consider a particular stone for its unique quality and select the one as per their taste.

Cost of gemstone engagement rings is usually way below and within budget of average buyers, which is an added advantage to the couples, apart from the choice of colors.

The stones are also popular as birthstones. So, you can set a birthstone of the bride-to-be on the ring.

If you are looking for an alternative to diamond engagement rings, then emerald is usually the choice as the stone is not only historic but matches the hardness of diamond and is rare also. Emerald can be picked up for its green color and different shades of it. Pearl also can be picked up safely for its unique shine and look. Opt for the cultured and natural pearls for their hardness.

The couples who are searching for a gemstone that has both the hardness for durability purpose and at the same time it is associated with royalty, they can settle for blue sapphire stone. This stone is rarer than diamond and adds value to the ring. Pink sapphire stone comes in different shades including bright hot pink and pale one. The couples can search for its rare varieties as well. if you are looking for the stones that look equally good on different settings, then yellow sapphire stones can be suggested for the purpose.

tanzanite is another stone that is popular for gemstone engagement rings around the world. The stone was discovered in 1967 and immediately was valued for its unique values. Tanzanite is gray or brownish in color. But it is a softer stone and demands a careful setting to adequately protect it from damages.

For a fancier gemstone, you should opt for purple sapphire that changes color when exposed to different lighting conditions. This stone even gives the impression of two different stones sometimes under the lights. Rainbow sapphire also is increasingly gaining in popularity for its fancy colors.

If the couples search around for the stones that are known for spirituality, purity and sincerity, then amethyst engagement ring can be relied on. Many religious activities are also associated with the stone.

Are you fond of blue stones? Then, many shades of blue color can be ensured when you go shopping for turquoise stones engagement rings. Birthstones and Their Meanings

There are a lot of legends and lore surrounding the practice of wearing birthstones. Many people believe that the idea of wearing birthstones started out as a marketing ploy by companies selling jewelry, but the reason behind the practice is much, much deeper than that. The practice of wearing birthstones has deep roots in religion and astrology.

The Myths Behind the Practice
One of the earliest stories connected to the practice of wearing birthstones comes from the Christian Bible. In the book of Exodus, the Breastplate of Aaron is described to have been mounted with twelve precious stones: ruby, topaz, beryl, turquoise, sapphire, emerald, jacinth, agate, amethyst, chrysolite, onyx and jasper. These twelve stones represented each of the twelve tribes of the Hebrews.

Other ancient cultures, the Hellenics and the Babylonians in particular, have associated certain precious stones with their gods and goddesses, and later on with the planets and the stars represented in astrological signs. These stones were given attributes pertaining to the astrological signs they are linked with, as well as supernatural, protective powers. To wear the particular gemstone associated with a particular month on that given month is to invoke the protection offered by the power of the stone.

Over time and as Christianity came to rise, the Church tried to downplay astrology in the lives of the flock, and so wearing gemstones came to represent guardian angels and the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ instead. The idea that gemstones have the power to protect its wearer was nonetheless retained. However, since only wealthy people can afford owning a different gemstone for each month, most people have adopted the practice of wearing just the gemstone that represents the month of their birth. Since then, these gemstones were referred to as birthstones.

The Meaning behind the Stones
Here are the different birthstones for each month of the Gregorian calendar and the meaning behind these stones.

  1. January: The garnet is the birthstone for the month of January. The bright red color of the garnet is associated with blood and thus, was thought to bestow good health upon its wearer. The garnet is also said to provide protection against nightmares and against the dangers posed by being alone in the dark. A person who favors the garnet is said to possess great patience and the capacity to endure hardships. This person whose birthstone is the garnet is consistent with his or her deeds and is blessed with a creative mind.
  2. February: A person born on the month of February has the amethyst for his or her birthstone. Amethyst is said to bestow, among other things, peace and clarity of the mind to its wearer. This gem also brings him or her a heightened sense of self-awareness and intuition.

  6. June: Pearls, produced by oysters and therefore the only gemstones that came from a living creature, is the birthstone of people born in June. June is the month of weddings in the Western world, and so the pearl has come to be associated with successful marriages, as well as with faith, loyalty and tranquility in life.

It is also said to nurture in its wearer integrity and contentment in his- or herself. The ruby is also said to inspire people to seek harmony with others.
  8. August: People born in August have the peridot as their birthstone. The peridot is said to bestow a heightened sense of dignity upon its wearer, and to bring upon him or her good fortune. It is also believed to provide its wearer protection against evil intentions and against the terrors of the night.
  9. September: Sapphire is the birthstone of September. It is a gemstone that is thought to build wisdom and clarity of thought in its wearer, as well as allow him or her the discernment to see truth no matter how deeply it is buried. The sapphire also inspires its wearer to develop serenity and tranquility in his or her soul.
  10. October: The birthstone for October is the opal. The opal, with its varying colors, is associated with depth in emotions. A person who wears the opal is granted the ability to feel deeply for his or her fellow person, to look at life with hope and to burn subtly with an inner fire.

Wearing the topaz is said to hasten a person's ability to heal his or her own body in times of illness or injury. It is also thought to nurture practicality and creativity in its wearer.
  12. December: Wearing the turquoise, the birthstone of December, is believed to bring luck and prosperity to its wearer in time for the coming New Year. The turquoise is also said to banish negative vibrations that can hinder the wearer's happiness and good fortune.

The practice of wearing birthstones goes deeper beyond any marketing ploy. It is a practice that has ancient origins, with deep roots in religion and astrology. Birthstones are versatile gifts to give on any season or occasion. Giving birthstones to loved ones shows caring and deep regard.
