Where would I go to have a loose gemstone placed in a setting?

I have an odd little collection of loose gemstones (semiprecious mostly) that I've collected over the years, some peach citrines that would be lovely earrings, an aquamarine that would make a nice pendant, and small garnet I would like to have as a ring etc. Where would one go to have such things made into jewelry? Would a local jewelry store offer this service or would I be forced to find one online?

You could go to a retail jewelry store that sends out your gemstones to their goldsmith for mounting, or an independent jeweler who will install them in house. Both will have catalogs for you to look at and choose mountings for your gemstones.
I would avoid going online since your gems may not be properly calibrated ( cut to fit specific dimensions ) and you may end up buying the wrong size mountings. It's also a good way to lose your gemstones that way if you send them out yourself to have mounted to a jeweler you have never met and talked to in person
I would also suggest checking to see if you have a local gem and mineral society. Most will offer classes on how to make your own jewelry. It's not as hard as it may seem, you will actually save money by making your own jewelry, and you would have something hand crafted by you. But if you don't want to make your own jewelry a gem and mineral society will usually have members willing to get mountings for you and set your stones for a price often less than a retail jeweler would

Something to consider for your opal gemstones is how to care for them.

Opals are quite fragile in relation to some of the other gemstones. On Mohs hardness scale, developed by Frederich Mohs, it rates about 5.5 to 6.5. To put that into perspective the lead in pencil rates about 1 Mohs since it is so soft and diamond rates at 10 which is the hardest. This means that opal gemstones do need to be looked after and you do not want to wear them when they might get scratched like doing the gardening or other manual work. You may think that rings would be stronger but the gem itself can still get scratched.

Opal gemstones contain a lot of water content which can be as high as 21% but typically is around 10% for opal gemstones. This means that they do not like exposure to prolonged heat or low humidity since it will dry them out and may cause cracking called crazing. Make sure you avoid rapid temperature changes for the same reason.

To clean your opal gemstones it does depend on what type of opal it is. If it is a solid opal then you can soak it in warm water with a little detergent without any worries and then wipe it with a soft cloth. If you have opal doublets or triplets then you do not want to soak it in water since that may affect the glue between the layers. If water gets in between the layers then it can give the opals a foggy appearance. Doublets and triplets can be cleaned with a soft cloth but make sure it is soft so that the gemstones do not get scratched.

To store your opal gemstones keep them away from other jewelry since gems such as diamonds can scratch them. If your gemstones are going to be put away for a long period put them in a plastic bag with a damp cotton wool ball and then seal the plastic bag. This should keep the air moist enough to keep them from crazing. If the opals are only going to put away for a short period then putting them in a soft bag away from other jewelry should be fine.

Do not use ultrasonic cleaners since they create microscopic bubbles in the water or cleaning solution that knocks dirt off jewelry. Unfortunately opals are too soft for this kind of cleaning and it can cause cracking.

The emerald is probably the most rare of all precious stones and is considered by some to be even more valuable than the diamond. Compared with other precious stones the emerald in its occurrence in nature is unique, for it is found in the rock in which it was formed. Unlike diamonds, sapphires and rubies, it never occurs in gem gravels. The earliest known locality where emeralds were found was in Upper Egypt near the coast of the Red Sea. The best stones, however, are found in Columbia, South America. Fine specimens have also been found in the United States in North Carolina.

While the usual shade of color seen in emeralds is alluded to as emerald green, there are other shades, such as grass green, sea green and green slightly tinged with yellow. The shades most highly valued are those of an intense fresh green sometimes compared with that seen in a meadow in spring.

Beryl is a mineral known to gem lovers under several different names, the most valued of which is the Emerald. The mineral beryl composing the various gems is practically the same in composition, hardness, and other properties, and the gems may be differentiated only by their color. In composition beryl is a silicate of aluminum and glucinum. On the scale of hardness beryl is graded 7 ½ to 8, and is thus much softer than the diamond, ruby, or sapphire. It is owing to this fact that the emerald scratches easily and that care must be taken that when worn it is not subject to chafing by diamonds or other harder gems.

Beryl in this common form occurs in many localities, but the mineral in its rarer form of emerald is comparatively of very rare occurrence. The emerald or green beryl, as it should be scientifically known, has long been the most highly prized of the green gems. In brilliancy it exceeds all other green gems excepting only the very rare green sapphire. The most valuable specimens exhibit a vivid grass-green shade, and it is to this color that they owe their great value. Other considerations, such as freedom from imperfections, are quite secondary in determining the value of the stone. In fact a perfect emerald is almost never found, and this circumstance has passed into an Eastern simile which runs, “As scarce as a perfect emerald,” this being a symbol for the acme of rarity. The emerald is light in weight and an emerald of a given size will be about a third larger than a diamond and forty-five per cent larger than a sapphire of equal weight. The distinctive color of the emerald is probably due to a trace of chromium in its composition.

Fine emeralds are generally cut cushion shape with step cutting, and in the East are often cut cabochon. Fine emeralds have advanced very rapidly during the last few years, both on account of the growing demand of fashion for the gems and the scarcity of really fine specimens.
