When you shop for opals you'll find significant differences in opal appearances and qualities. Many opals for sale are solid gems, but some are composites, called doublets or triplets. A composite opal is made of a thin slice of real opal that is mounted to the top of other, cheaper materials. There's nothing wrong with buying doublet and triplet opals as long as the seller discloses that they are composites and you pay an appropriate price for them.
